Guidelines for ecstatic dancing

A couple of guidelines before we start dancing:

  • Move however you wish
  • Avoid *verbal* communication during the dance
  • No phones on the dance floor
  • Dance barefoot for a more grounded experience
  • Observe respect for self and one another
  • Use sensitivity when engaging with others
  • Obtain consent before dancing with someone (during contact dance only)
  • Respect the collective space
  • No drug and alcohol use during the dance
  • Ecstatic Dance is what you make of it (there is no choreography)
  • Have a glass of water ready, a pen & paper in case you want to journal
  • Create a nice ambiance for yourself on your dancefloor at home i.e. candles, flowers, sage to create a warm feel
  • Allow yourself to drop into a safe space, free from distractions

Set the space & prepare yourself:

  • Begin aligning all aspects of your life with that of beauty, intentionality, presence, and ritual
  • Create a designated movement space that you will use for your practice during the sacred dance journey
  • Make sure the space is private, clear of clutter, easily accessible, allows for full-body movement, and you have enough space to lay on the floor fully extended. Ideally, give yourself as much space for free movement as possible so that you do not feel spatially restricted during your practices
  • Make sure you can be undisturbed for the whole duration of your practice to drop in deep without having to worry about anything
  • The sensual dance journeys are sacred rituals and deserve to be honored in this way. Surround yourself in an environment which supports peace, presence, beauty, and creativity
  • Find out what environment best supports your most peaceful and radiant self. As you become more clear what this space looks like, feels like, smells like, also take a moment to reflect on the other spaces that you find yourself spending time in, in all moments of your life.
  • Remember, your body is a giant antenna, the importance and influence of your surroundings should not be overlooked! As you move deeper into the dance immersion, you will naturally become increasingly aware and sensitive to both internal and external vibrations/energy.
